| ARNEAE A very minor site! |
The site of Arneae is not easy to find. The road is in the process of being upgraded after some large rock falls had obliterated the roadway in places. From the Kas Demre or Kale road you require to take a left road to Kasaba and from there the road to Dagabag and then onto Guncali the nearest point to Arneae. This road is rather precipitous and it does not do to look at the scenery on either side but fix one’s eyes firmly on the middle of the road. The site is heavily wooded and again very difficult to climb . George Bean stated that the site was heavily protected by nature and nothing in the subsequent fifty years has lessened this.

Just visible on the brow of the hill are the remains of a long wall. Nearby are Lycian house tombs in a fairly poor state. Within the walls are two churches and the walls themselves have two gates and several towers. Many of the inscriptions date from Roman times including a dedication to the Emperor Trajan.

On the return journey just south of Cagman, on the left hand side are two building that appear to have ecclesiastical connections. One certainly is the remains of the eastern end of a church, the other, not on the same alignment must have been used during the same period. Elsewhere re-used material can be seen in the vernacular buildings.
