George Bean gives a detailed account of Balbura and it’s association with other towns in the Cibyratis. These towns included Bubon Oenoanda and Cibyra in a tetrapolis with Cibyra as it’s head. Although it was never at any time a part of Lycia until during Roman rule it became a full member of the Lycian League probably around the end of the Mithridatic War, about 82 B.C.
Today the site is near the village of Mundaragac which is just south of Altinyayla the regional administrative centre. A feature of the site are the ruins of a fort on one of the two hills overlooking the pass. It is one of the highest sites in Lycia with the acropolis nearly 5,000 feet above sea level.

The site is to the right!

The remains of a temple with a carved sarcophagus lid.

Close up of the detail from the sarcophagus.

The site has been the subject of detailed excavation by a British team some years ago, and with exploitation of the building material the resulting nature of the site is more difficult to explain.

Nothing to suggest what this was but it could be the theatre.

This could be the agora!

The site is littered with broken columns.

A subterranean entrance to the theatre, perhaps!
