Phellos was the high town above Antephelos. It is presumed that it was the earlier site which was eventually superseded by the greater prosperity of Antephelos (Kas) It may be that at it’s higher altitude it was more a summer encampment during the high summer and allowed the residents to escape the heat of the lower town. It is also possible that it served mainly as a fortress and look out for the town below. It was certainly not very large being situated on the brow of the hill. The total length some 400 metres long and not more that75 metres wide. However it was very densely built up and incorporated many probable public buildings and tombs. On the climb up to the site there are several sarcophagi, some more notable than others. There is a way down to Kas but it is very precipitous and not to be recommended.

It’s up there!

The wall around the city, but only where it is needed!

A rock cut tomb outside the city, note the fire break that leads to the site.

A further example of a Lycian Sarcophagus.

The remains at present are varied and more than ever reflect that the town’s usefulness was superseded by Antephellos.

To get to the site without too much trouble one can taker the main road out of Kas and just before the town of Agilli take a left to the village of Pinarbasi where ther is a metereiological station and fire watcher. Leaving the car here and following the fire break leads to the two sections of Phellos. For the more adventuresome there are hikes organised from Kas which leaves you at the station and then allows you to work your way down using Kate Crows Lycian marks back to Kas. This hike being some 12 km long!

The cornerstones of some public building but no indication as to what purpose it served.

A possible flight of steps to a higher level.

Again a possible building.

A cistern of which there are many.
