Telemessos or Fethiye as the modern successor is known has few archaeological remains from it’s early period in history. However it does have a fine selection of rock tombs which have been well illustrated before. The town was destroyed by an earthquake in 1957 and the ruins and rubble bulldozed into the sea to create a new quay and harbour wall.

Outside the city there are examples of pigeon hole tombs.

But the feature on the landward side of the town are the collection of temple type tombs. The most spectacular being the Tomb of Amyntas.

The tomb of Amyntas which can be easily reached, once free but now there is a small fee payable to the guardian if he is there! Early graffiti can be seen which indicates that in the eighteenth century it was on the tourist trail.

The theatre or what remains of it, small in comparison to others in then region. Fethiye is a very nice town and well worth being a base from which to visit Lycia. It has the added advantage that the famous beach resort of Oludenize is easily reached by dolmus.

Mention must be made regarding the museum in Fethiye. It is excellent and the museums directors are involved in looking after the archaeological sites in the near vicinity.

An example of the use of clay tiles for a burial chamber.

Here a complete clay coffin.

Above the town is a medieval castle attributed to the Knights of St. John.
